In the 18th century, rural gentlemen wore this punched footwear in the rough wetlands of Scotland and Ireland. The fine holes allowed the shoes to drain off any wetness and stay aerated during the day. Later the British aristocracy enjoyed the elegant and practical brogueings. From there, it was a short way, until the punched leather became popular on the European mainland. Today the perforations remain, but as a stylish addition to a classic shoe.
